WHAT IS ANCESTRAL HEALING?

Ancestral healing is the practice of tending the patterns, gifts, griefs, and responsibilities that move through our lineages. It is a way of listening to what has been carried forward, what is ready to be transformed, and what wants to be lived differently now.

At Sanctuary for Spirit, I understand ancestral healing as both sacred and practical. It lives in ritual, in the body, in the home, in memory, in the land, and in the everyday choices we make about how to care for ourselves and our people.

Based in Texas, traditionally Caddo and Comanche lands, serving clients online across the U.S. and worldwide.

WHAT ANCESTRAL HEALING MEANS

Ancestral healing is not about perfection, and it is not about erasing the past. It is about noticing what has been inherited, naming what is true, and creating space for something more life-giving to take root.

That may include family patterns, spiritual disconnection, grief that was never spoken, gifts that were never named, or ways of living that were once necessary but no longer serve us. It can also include reclaiming the beauty, strength, and wisdom that were always there.

In this way, ancestral healing is not only about pain. It is also about belonging, memory, and the quiet work of remembering how to live in relationship with what came before us.

WHY IT MATTERS

Many of the struggles people carry are not only personal. They are shaped by family systems, culture, history, migration, survival, and the environments that formed them. When we begin to understand that, we can meet ourselves with more compassion and less shame.

Ancestral healing matters because it gives us language for what lives in the body and the spirit. It helps us understand why some things feel repeated, why some longings feel older than we are, and why healing often becomes deeper when we include lineage, land, and ritual.

This is one reason I work from a bio-psycho-social-spiritual lens. I do not see people as isolated beings. I see us as part of a wider living system.

What it can include

Ancestral healing can take many forms, depending on the person and the season of life. In my work, it may include:

  • Ritual to mark transition, release, protection, or blessing.

  • Reflection on family patterns and inherited roles.

  • Home-based practices that create steadiness and sacredness.

  • Plant wisdom, folk medicine, and practical daily care.

  • Spiritual tools for grounding, remembrance, and connection.

  • Attention to the nervous system and the way the body responds to stress, belonging, and safety.

For some people, ancestral healing is quiet and intimate. For others, it is devotional, ceremonial, or deeply tied to the land. Often it is a braid of all three.

How ritual supports healing

Ritual gives form to what is often hard to hold in words. It helps us cross thresholds with intention. It can make space for grief, gratitude, release, remembrance, and repair.

When ritual is used with care, it becomes a bridge between the visible and the unseen. It reminds us that healing is not only intellectual. It is embodied, relational, and often seasonal. A simple cup of tea, a candle, a prayer, a meal prepared with intention, or a moment of stillness can become part of the work.

This is why ritual is central to my approach. It creates a container where healing can be felt, not just understood.

Land and lineage

Ancestral healing is also about relationship with land. The places our people lived, migrated through, were uprooted from, or made home in all shape the stories our bodies carry. Land holds memory. So do home practices, foodways, songs, and the ways our families cared for one another.

Ritual, living with the land, and kinship are ancestral ways of knowing — old wisdom that lives across lineages and remains available to all who feel called to remember it. This means ancestral healing is not only about looking backward. It is also about choosing how we want to live now: with more attention, more reciprocity, and more care.

How this relates to Ritual Therapy

Ritual Therapy is the way I bring ancestral healing into one-on-one spiritual care. It is a sacred session opened and closed in ritual, designed to help you tend the mind, body, spirit, ancestors, and land.

In session, we may work with family patterns, spiritual longing, home practices, and practical next steps that help the work live beyond the appointment.

Who this is for

This work is for the ones who feel the old call. It is for:

  • People wanting to understand inherited patterns with more compassion.

  • Folks seeking deeper belonging to lineage, land, or spirit.

  • Women, caregivers, hearth keepers, and wisdom keepers.

  • People who want healing that includes both soul and structure.

  • Those looking for a grounded, spiritually respectful way to work with family history.

If you are carrying what was handed down, or if you are ready to choose a different way forward, this may be a good place to begin.

A note on complexity

Ancestry is never simple. Most family stories are braided with migration, mixture, survival, rupture, resilience, silence, and love. I do not try to flatten that into a neat story. Instead, I honor complexity. I believe healing is often most honest when it can hold contradiction, tenderness, and truth at the same time. That is part of why this work matters to me so deeply.

FAQ

Is ancestral healing religious?

Not necessarily. It can be spiritual, secular, ceremonial, or somewhere in between. We work in ways that fit your beliefs and comfort.

Is ancestral healing therapy?

Not in the clinical sense. At Sanctuary for Spirit, ancestral healing is spiritual and educational support, not psychotherapy or medical treatment.

Can ancestral healing happen online?

Yes. Many people find online sessions just as powerful because the work is relational, ritual-based, and rooted in conversation and intention.

Do I need to know my family history to begin?

No. You can begin with what you know, what you feel, and what you are ready to explore.

SFS Brand-2.jpg

Ancestral healing asks us to remember that we are not beginning from nothing. We are part of a long line of living, surviving, adapting, and becoming. Some of what we carry needs to be tended. Some of it needs to be blessed. Some of it needs to be released.

If you feel called to this work, I would be honored to walk with you.
