Eco-Spirituality & Animism

Eco-spirituality is the practice of being in relationship with the living world as sacred and alive. Within Ritual Therapy, this becomes a way of restoring right relationship with the land, learning how to listen, tend, and respond with care, and remembering that you are part of a larger web of life.

WHAT ECO-SPIRITUALITY AND ANIMISM ARE

Eco-spirituality is the understanding that the earth, its ecosystems, and all living beings are not just resources, but relatives. Animism, in this context, means noticing and honoring that spirit shows up in:

  • Plants, trees, and fungi.

  • Animals, birds, insects, and other creatures.

  • Rivers, springs, mountains, stones, and weather.

  • Places, landscapes, and the land itself.

“Observable animism” means paying attention to how these relationships actually show up in your life: what you notice, what moves you, what feels alive, and how you respond.

ECO-SPIRITUALITY IN RITUAL THERAPY

Within Ritual Therapy, eco-spirituality and animism support:

  • Inner life: helping you feel more held by the living world and less alone in your struggles.

  • Ancestral life: remembering how your ancestors lived with and from the land, and what wisdom and wounds that carries.

  • Outer life: learning practical ways to care for place, home, and community in reciprocal, sustainable ways.

Sessions may include:

  • Time spent outdoors or in relationship with plants, land, and place (in person or guided).

  • Rituals of gratitude, reciprocity, and listening to the living world.

  • Reflection on your relationship with land, nature, and more-than-human beings.

  • Practices that help you feel more grounded, resourced, and connected to the web of life.

WHAT THIS WORK CAN SUPPORT

Eco-spirituality within Ritual Therapy can support people who:

  • Feel a deep pull toward the land, plants, animals, or place but don’t have a clear framework for it.

  • Experience grief, anxiety, or overwhelm about ecological crisis and want spiritually grounded support.

  • Want to honor their ancestors through land-based practice and right relationship.

  • Are building or tending a home, garden, or homestead and want it to feel sacred and reciprocal.

  • Already identify as animist, pagan, pantheist, or nature-based and want deeper, ethical support.

This is spiritual and educational support, not a substitute for environmental, medical, or mental health care.

ECO-SPIRITUALITY AND ANIMISM NATURALLY OVERLAP WITH:

  • [Folk Medicine]– where plants and land are teachers and allies in healing and care.

  • [Folk Magic] – where protection, blessing, and healing extend to home, land, and more-than-human kin.

  • [Sacred Homesteading] – where daily work on the land becomes a form of devotion and reciprocity.

  • [Ethnobotany & Research] – where plant knowledge, cultural history, and research inform how we relate to flora and place.

  • [Evolutionary Biology & Ecology] – where human beings are understood as ecological creatures shaped by relationship with land and more-than-human life.

Within Ritual Therapy, these threads are woven together based on what you need in a given season of life.

FAQ

Do I need to identify as animist or pagan to work with you?
No. You only need to be open to exploring your relationship with the living world in a way that feels honest and meaningful to you. We work within your language and your beliefs.

Is this about saving the planet?
I
t is about relationship first. Many people find that when their relationship with the living world deepens, their actions and choices naturally shift toward more care and reciprocity. This work supports that process without shame or pressure.

Can this work honor my existing religion or spiritual path?
Yes. Eco-spirituality here is meant to deepen what is already meaningful to you, not replace your beliefs. It can complement many religious and spiritual traditions.
